WHO WE ARE
The Mecklenburg Kiwanis Club was organized by a group of leading business men in August, 1952. It's sponsor was the Kiwanis Club of Charlotte, which was founded in 1919.
Mecklenburg Kiwanis has had an active and inspired program throughout the years, performing many worthwhile services within the community.
Fund Raising History
- The "Mini-Railroad". Similar to what today is the Tweetsie Railroad.
- The Wally Fowler Gospel Sing. Raised over $100,000 over 10 years.
- Several thousand dollars generated from the sales of lights & bulbs.
- The "Parade of Homes" for several years. The club operated concessions and assisted in setting up the event.
- The "Travel & Adventures Series" was held at Ovens Auditorium for 38 years, starting in 1961. This event raised several thousands of dollars by hosting six performances each year. It garnered much attention from the locals, and many from out of state as well.
