About Us

The Mecklenburg Kiwanis Club was organized by a group of leading business men in August, 1952. It's sponsor was the Kiwanis Club of Charlotte, which was founded in 1919.

Mecklenburg Kiwanis has had an active and inspired program throughout the years, performing many worthwhile services within the community.

Fund Raising History

  • The "Mini-Railroad". Similar to what today is the Tweetsie Railroad.
  • The Wally Fowler Gospel Sing. Raised over $100,000 over 10 years.
  • Several thousand dollars generated from the sales of lights & bulbs.
  • The "Parade of Homes" for several years. The club operated concessions and assisted in setting up the event.
  • The "Travel & Adventures Series" was held at Ovens Auditorium for 38 years, starting in 1961. This event raised several thousands of dollars by hosting six performances each year. It garnered much attention from the locals, and many from out of state as well.
  • The Cow Chip Bingo fund raiser began in 2003 and has been highly enjoyable and successful. It will be continued for years to come.

Kiwanis Charitable Projects

  • The Alexander Home was created to help disturbed children. The club built a workshop and bought two mini-buses.
  • In the 50's, a miniature train was designed for children and was installed at Revolution Park. Over $35,000 was raised for this.
  • The Girl Scouts received over $20,000 to help benefit Camp Occoneechee at Lake Lure and their various needs. The Kiwanis helped contribute for a 21 year period.
  • Sponsorship of numerous youth athletic leagues and teams. The American Legion Baseball, YMCA basketball, the Track & Field club, among others benefited from Mecklenburg Kiwanis Club donations.
  • A sewing class for the underprivelaged at the YMCA.
  • Helped start the "Boys Town of NC"
  • The Pediatric Cancer Fund began in 2006 to help treat children with cancer. In 2008, we imported the first international pediatric cancer patient; an 8 year old girl from Belize.
